How to
Disable trackpad input while typing on Mac
macOS offers several ways to reduce accidental trackpad input, but they solve different problems. Start with the free built-in options, then add a timed guard only if you still need one.
Option 1: Turn off Tap to click
Go to System Settings → Trackpad → Point & Click and turn off Tap to click. You will need to physically press the trackpad to click. This is the simplest fix when a light brush from your palm or thumb causes the problem.
The cost is convenience. If you prefer tapping, you may find yourself turning it back on. Apple’s Trackpad settings guide documents Tap to click, click pressure, tracking speed, and the other current options.
Option 2: Require a firmer physical click
In the same Point & Click panel, change Click to a firmer setting. This raises the pressure required for a physical click. It can help if your palm presses the trackpad rather than merely touching it.
Option 3: Ignore the built-in trackpad when a mouse is connected
If you type with an external mouse, macOS can disable the built-in trackpad while that device is present. Open System Settings → Accessibility → Pointer Control, then enable “Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present.”
This is an all-or-nothing choice. It works well at a desk but does not help when the built-in trackpad is your primary pointing device.
Option 4: Pause pointer input for a moment after each keystroke
PalmGuardian uses a different rule. Every key press starts a short recovery window. Pointer events that arrive during that window are discarded, then normal input returns automatically. You can set the delay from 0.1 to 2.0 seconds.
| Approach | Keeps Tap to click | Works without a mouse | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off Tap to click | No | Yes | Requires physical clicks |
| Firmer click pressure | Yes | Yes | May not stop light taps |
| Ignore built-in trackpad | Not relevant | No | Built-in trackpad stays off |
| PalmGuardian | Yes | Yes | Briefly pauses all pointer input |
Choose the shortest delay that works
- Start at 0.3 seconds. Type normally and deliberately brush the trackpad.
- Increase by 0.1 seconds. Stop as soon as accidental clicks are consistently blocked.
- Test mixed keyboard and mouse work. A long delay can feel intrusive when you type and point rapidly.
PalmGuardian pauses mouse movement, clicks, and scrolling generally during the recovery window. It cannot currently distinguish the built-in trackpad from an external mouse. You can disable protection instantly from the menu bar when you need uninterrupted pointer input.
