Cursor jumps while typing on Mac?
If text suddenly appears in the wrong sentence, the cause may be an accidental trackpad click. It may also be an app, another input device, or a hardware problem. Run these checks in order.
1. Work out whether the insertion point moved
An accidental click usually moves the text insertion point to wherever the pointer was resting. You may also see selected text replaced when you continue typing. If the pointer itself shakes, drifts, or jumps even when your hands are away from the keyboard and trackpad, treat that as a different problem.
2. Test without Tap to click
Open System Settings, choose Trackpad, then turn off Tap to click for a short test. Apple describes Tap to click as a one-finger tap that performs a click. If the jumping stops, light accidental contact is the likely cause.
You can leave Tap to click off, or turn it back on and use a timed guard if tapping is part of how you work. Apple’s current Multi-Touch gesture guide explains the available trackpad gestures.
3. Make physical clicks firmer
In System Settings → Trackpad → Point & Click, change Click to a firmer setting. This can reduce unintended physical presses. It does not filter every tap or contact, so test it in the app where the problem occurs.
4. Compare apps and devices
- Type for a few minutes in TextEdit and in the app where the problem appears.
- Disconnect extra mice, trackpads, drawing tablets, and remote-control tools temporarily.
- Restart the Mac and test before reopening background utilities.
- Clean and dry the trackpad surface. Moisture and debris can produce erratic input.
If the problem appears in one app only, check that app’s editing, prediction, selection, and accessibility settings. If the pointer moves without contact across several apps, contact Apple Support or a repair provider rather than masking the symptom.
5. Add a short typing guard when accidental contact is the cause
PalmGuardian starts a configurable 0.1 to 2.0 second recovery window after each key press. Pointer events during that window are discarded locally. The app does not record which key you pressed and does not send typing activity anywhere.
The tradeoff matters: PalmGuardian briefly pauses pointer movement, clicks, and scrolling generally, including an external mouse. Start with a short delay such as 0.3 seconds and increase it only if accidental clicks still get through.
